What You Should Know About Custom Painted Golf Carts

If you’re looking for a custom painted golf cart or want to paint your own, you’ve got lots of options to consider. If you’re buying your cart new and want to have a custom paint job done, it’s as simple as having the dealership manage it. However, you may already own a golf cart and want to customize the paint. In those situations, what are your options? You have three main options – having it painted, painting it yourself, or applying a wrap.

Usually you’re looking at a total cost of $400 – $700, but it’s well worth it if you’re looking for great results that last.

Have Your Golf Cart Custom Painted By a Professional

The first option is to have a custom golf cart shop handle the paint job for you. Typically, this is the most expensive option, but the cost can vary quite a bit depending on where you are and how much customization is required. Paint Your Own Golf Cart

Your next option is to get custom-painted golf carts is to handle it on your own, and while this is a little more challenging, it’s certainly cheaper. You’ll want to do your research before you paint, though!

Most golf cart bodies are made of fiberglass. Painting fiberglass isn’t too complex. It starts with sandpaper. You’ll want to use that to buff the fiberglass. From there, you’ll want to apply a primer and then use the paint. Often two coats of primer are best, but be sure to let it dry between coats.

Are Some Paint Choices Better Than Others?

If you’re painting your golf cart, there are good choices and there are bad choices. Remember that most golf cart bodies are plastic, so using something like vinyl paint or enamel paint just simply isn’t a good idea. Instead, acrylic spray paint is the best idea. If you can get it, you could also use plastic fusion spray paint because it’s perfect on something like the smooth surface of a golf cart. Typically one spray can of paint is best, but you may need a few additional cans.

Can I paint plastic like my golf cart top?

If you’re going to paint the plastic on your golf cart, you’ll want to be sure to prime it first. Choose one that was designed for plastic, then be sure to cover the entire surface of the cart. You want even strokes, either with the spray or a brush. Be sure you read the label because it will include a drying time. Don’t do anything until it’s completely dry. If it looks to thin, you can repeat the entire process once the surface is dry.

On average a cart body with 2 coats of base will take around 1/2 – 3/4 of a quart of paint. It’s going to depend on the color and your desired finish.

Wrap Your Golf Cart

Maybe paint is more work than you’re looking to tackle. Golf cart wraps are a safe and non-toxic alternative. You can achieve a highly custom look with a vinyl wrap. Installing a golf cart skin requires vinyl, a squeegee and a heat gun.
